So, Why Your Logo Gotta Have Chains In It?

logo We, the founders of the Sickle Cell Advocates for Research and Empowerment, specifically chose the symbol of a set of chains breaking apart for our organization's logo for three very important reasons.
First, the breaking of the chains represents the ultimate goal of the medical doctors working in the field of sickle cell disease laboratory research. That is, to one day develop a cure for the disease... essentially breaking the "genetic link" that is responsible for the vice-like hold this illness has on our people.

Second, the image is also an historically accurate symbol of the main reason that sickle cell disease exists in the Western Hemisphere at all...that is, the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This is the means by which the HbS gene was largely transported to these shores. Thus, the image is representative of our desire in the sickle cell community to one day break free of this ancient specter of bondage that still continues to loom over our people.

And third, the chain imagery represents our intention in S.C.A.R.E. to finally, once and for all, shatter the bonds of dependency, (in all of its forms, i.e., physical, mental, emotional, financial, political, etc.), that have so effectively shackled our community for centuries.
